Deb Gilmartin / Artist
Deb Gilmartin is an Australian artist with a background spanning scientific study, teaching, and professional art practice. Her work has been exhibited across Australia and internationally, with a focus on drawing and ceramics.
In 2006–2007, Deb was appointed Artist in Residence with Australian Aerospace at the Army Aviation Training Centre in Oakey, Queensland. During this time, she documented the introduction of the Tiger Helicopters through drawings, illustrations, and photography. This body of work culminated in the exhibition Tigers, Rotors & Blokes.
Deb has completed commissioned work for Australian Aerospace as well as private clients, and her work is held in collections in Australia and overseas. Her illustrations were also published in Contact, the Australian military magazine, in 2007 and 2008.
Alongside her practice, Deb taught drawing from 2008 to 2019 at the McGregor Winter and Summer Schools, working with beginner through to advanced students. Her training includes advanced drawing studies at the Slade Fine Art Summer School, along with workshops under established Australian artists and ceramicists.
Her academic background includes a Master of Science (Entomology, with Distinction), a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Science, and a Graduate Diploma of Education.
Deb has exhibited widely, including with the Tasmanian Ceramics Association, at Revolution Social Gallery in Hobart, Enliven in Deloraine, and internationally in London with the Society of Feline Artists. She has been a finalist in the Hans Heysen Landscape Prize and received major awards including Grand Champion Picture at the Toowoomba Royal Show. Her exhibition history also includes invitations to the Kedumba Drawing Award and the International Airshow at Avalon.
Her practice continues to evolve through exploration of drawing and ceramics, informed by both technical precision and observational detail.
