Joanne Mitchelson / Artist
Joanne is a Tasmanian artist whose work reflects a lifelong connection with nature and the rural landscape. Born in Launceston in 1971 and raised on her family’s farm near Westbury, she developed a love of drawing from an early age and discovered watercolour at fifteen while attending Deloraine High School. After studying at the Launceston TAFE School of Art, she gained an Associate Diploma of Graphic Design in 1993, receiving the Award for Outstanding Performance. Though trained in design, Joanne’s true passion remained in watercolour, where she has since developed a distinctive style marked by layered depth, fine detail, and a sensitivity to light and texture.
Her paintings often depict Tasmania’s landscapes, farmscapes, and native flora and fauna, capturing the quiet beauty of the natural world. Through her work, Joanne invites viewers to experience the calm and renewal that nature offers, portraying her subjects as places of reflection and peace. She hopes to inspire others to discover their own connection with the land and its restorative power.
In addition to her artistic practice, Joanne is also a musician, performing harp, flute, pan flute, and violin. Alongside her husband, Hamish, she performs as a musical duo for weddings, concerts, and festivals. Their shared love of Tasmania’s wilderness often finds its way into Joanne’s art, with inspiration drawn from bushwalks, photographs, and natural specimens collected along the way. Whether painting a sweeping landscape or a single eucalyptus leaf, her work expresses a reverence for the beauty of creation and the quiet artistry of nature itself.
