Paul Brunyee / Artist
Born with an early fascination for design, Paul Brunyee’s creative practice has evolved across a range of mediums, from jewellery and leadlight to large-scale sculptural works. After being formally trained in leadlight and foiled glass in Sydney under Jeffrey Hamilton, Paul developed a strong foundation in craftsmanship, producing detailed panels, Tiffany-style lamps and bespoke glass pieces over many years.
Since relocating to Tasmania in 2006, Paul is now based in Karoola, where the surrounding landscape and space have supported a shift toward sculpture. Working primarily with metal and glass, he is particularly drawn to aluminium and copper for their ability to change and respond over time, allowing each piece to evolve beyond its initial form.
Paul’s work explores form, movement and material interaction, often incorporating engineered elements within sculptural structures. His practice reflects a continued interest in both precision and experimentation, informed by decades of hands-on making.
His sculptures have been exhibited publicly across Tasmania, including Odd Man Out, which won the 2016 Artentwine Sculpture Competition and is now installed at Windsor Park, Riverside.
More recent work includes Then, Now and the Future, a kinetic sculpture exploring motion and conceptual ideas around time and perception, with an internal structure designed to rotate on its axis.
Paul continues to develop new work from his studio in Northern Tasmania, with an ongoing focus on material exploration and sculptural form.
